Quran verses about grief and sadness
"Do not grieve — Allah is with us" (9:40) was said in a cave with enemies at its mouth. Surah ad-Duha was revealed to a grieving Prophet ﷺ: "Your Lord has not abandoned you" (93:3). Yaqub, weeping for Yusuf, said "I complain of my anguish and sorrow only to Allah" (12:86). The Quran does not forbid sadness; it tells you where to carry it.
Grief has a place in the Quran — prophets wept. These verses are the ones believers reach for when sorrow sits heavy.

Do not grieve — Allah is with us
Grief
إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثَانِىَ ٱثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِى ٱلْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَٰحِبِهِۦ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَنَا ۖ فَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُۥ بِجُنُودٍ لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلسُّفْلَىٰ ۗ وَكَلِمَةُ ٱللَّهِ هِىَ ٱلْعُلْيَا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
˹It does not matter˺ if you ˹believers˺ do not support him, for Allah did in fact support him when the disbelievers drove him out ˹of Mecca˺ and he was only one of two. While they both were in the cave, he reassured his companion, “Do not worry; Allah is certainly with us.” So Allah sent down His serenity upon the Prophet, supported him with forces you ˹believers˺ did not see, and made the word of the disbelievers lowest, while the Word of Allah is supreme. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise
Do not grieve; Allah is with us.

Your Lord has not abandoned you
Grief
مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ
Your Lord ˹O Prophet˺ has not abandoned you, nor has He become hateful ˹of you˺
Your Lord has not abandoned you.

The next life is far better for you than this one
Grief
وَلَلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ
And the next life is certainly far better for you than this one
The next life is better for you.

Your Lord will give you so much that you will be pleased
Grief
وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَىٰٓ
And ˹surely˺ your Lord will give so much to you that you will be pleased
He will give you until you are pleased.

I complain of my anguish and sorrow only to Allah
Grief
قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
He replied, “I complain of my anguish and sorrow only to Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know
Yaqub takes his sorrow to Allah alone.
Do not falter or grieve — you will have the upper hand
Courage
وَلَا تَهِنُواْ وَلَا تَحۡزَنُواْ وَأَنتُمُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَوۡنَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ
Do not falter or grieve, for you will have the upper hand, if you are ˹true˺ believers
Do not lose heart or grieve — you will be superior if you are believers.

Hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah
Anxiety
ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَطۡمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِۗ أَلَا بِذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطۡمَئِنُّ ٱلۡقُلُوبُ
those who believe and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort
Hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah.
